2020.09.26 04:15 MagicalHamster r/Gallifrey's own Season 14! Episode 2: The New Companion's First Trip in the TARDIS!

*Companions'
"Gallifrey’s Own” is a fun little forum game where every week you’re given a prompt for an episode of Doctor Who. You write up a pitch and post it in the comments below. You can up-vote the pitch you like the most, and the one with the most up-votes at the end of the week is the one we go with. And it is in this manner that Gallifrey writes an entire season of Doctor Who!
Now you may be saying to yourself, “Wait, there was a season 13?” Yup – Gallifrey wrote an episode guide for season 13. You don’t need to have read a lick of it in order to write for season 14, though. All you need to know is that the “Fam” have left the Doctor, and she’s got two new companions. Victor and Stephi are teenagers from an alternate future where aliens known as the Brunnan ruled Earth. The Doctor set history straight, and gave them bracelets that prevented them from being erased. Now they’re off to new adventures!
(Season 14 Episode Guide is forthcoming!)
LAST WEEK’s EPISODE: SEASON 14 EP 1 – ALTERNATIVE FACTS by u/Tanokki In the opening montage we see that an alien species known as the Brunnan crash-landed in the year 838. They look like a cross between a vulture and an armadillo, and they did some breeding with humans to increase their numbers. In the present, the TARDIS throws a fit and tosses the Doctor onto the streets of London in the year 2023…except things are different. She goes into a convenience store and finds out UBK; the United States, Canada, India, Australia, etc. labeled as colonies;
Two teenagers, who we later learn are wards of the state, help the Doctor to a “Data Café” to find more information. Thus, we have our new companions – a young white man named Victor, and a young Hispanic woman named Steph. They’re trying to avoid their foster dad, who is angry at them for something they did that goes unmentioned. On their way, they run into a Brunnan, and it becomes obvious humans are second class citizens who live under the constant threat of being “catalogued,” which involves being put into suspended animation. Then, a person’s organs and body parts are itemized and analyzed, and anything useful is taken. This is how both Victor and Stephi lost both of their parents.
The Brunnan realizes the Doctor is an alien and doesn’t want to deal with the paper work, so he lets them go. They get back to the TARDIS where we discover it has redecorated itself – halfway between classic Who and the crystal look 13 is known for. There’s a stairway below that leads to the underside of the main console. Victor and Steph tell the Doctor about the Brunnan, and she gives them special bracelets. She also reveals the TARDIS is a time machine as they hurtle into the year 838.
The first Brunnan that crashed on Earth is trying to convince King Ecgberht of Wessex and Kent that they’re ambassadors from the stars, and he seems poised to accept them as such. Then the Doctor and her new friends appear dressed in white and wearing black sunglasses – they declare that they are angels, and the Brunnan are demons. The King sides with the ‘angels’, and orders his men to kill the Brunnan. The Doctor speaks with it and finds out it really did crash by accident – so she helps repair their ship, and the Brunnan leave Earth.
History as we know it is restored – but Victor and Steph remain. The bracelets they wear protect them from being erased when the timelines change. The Doctor says she can help set them up in modern Earth, but she also offers them the opportunity to go through space and time with her…and they accept.
Some very imaginative entries last week! Seems everybody is bored of modern day companions – everyone dreamed up characters from the future, or alternate earths! I’d like to give a special shutout to u/Toy_5oldier’s entry, which featured a robot named Kip that I was quite partial to.
THIS WEEK’S PROMPT: A NEW TEAM AND A NEW DYNAMIC! We know that Victor and Steph are from a very different timeline than ours. Even present day England will be alien to them! We know that they’re orphans, and that their foster dad was going to “chew them out” for something. But other than that, we got some nice blank slates to work with. You’ve got two goals for this week:
1. Victor and Steph spent most of their first episode reacting to things. Let’s get a good feel for their personalities in this episode. Who are they? What do they stand for? What motivates them?
2. Establish the team dynamic! 11 and Amy/Rory was a different experience than 11 and Clara. What will the team dynamic between 13, Victor and Steph look like?
Other than that, the only requirement is that the story shows their first big adventure through space and time. Past, present, or future. (The Doctor mentioned about getting them set up in modern day Earth -- you can decide how or if to handle that.)

2019.11.27 20:41 Nomrocket But It's Your Data

Jasher stood over the husk that had been Earth in Universe -3233994677995321233, which was ironically one million more negative than the famous "Food Universe" (-3233994677994321233) which was the origin Universe for the current winner of the Jasher personality war. Once Food Universe Jasher won, only briefly did he lose the spot.
"So this is when it would have happened. This is how bad it has to get. Oh, and it's Thanksgiving." noticed Jasher.
The Universe numbering system Jasher came up with was simple:
Universe intent was constantly sliding up and down. Mostly down. When Jasher shows up the first time, that number freezes forever. Universe that are only one number apart are virtually identical, pun intended. In -3233994677994321233 (Food Universe), it was Josh Martin walking into a hospital because he was sick and quite clearly going crazy. A being claiming to be a thirty mile long battlecruiser, and a classic film actress were talking to him in his head.
"Look, I know this isn't normal." said Josh. "See, I know I have bronchitis but watch. Oh, this is going to be disgusting." The doctors watched stunned as a stream of matter left his mouth and gracefully glid through the air to a nearby trashcan. "I should probably stop vaping the THC carts. They keep adding vitamin E for some reason. Ok, let me check." Josh closed his eyes, and used his lung eyes to check his lungs again. "See, that's the bizarre thing. I know I don't have eyes inside my lungs right? I mean I'd see them. Hmm, unless the eyes are invisible!" said Jasher and smiled. Their current Universe intent value, -3233994677995321233 became their designation. But everybody calls it the Food Universe because of the massive Dyson Restaurant Constructs from Earth, encircling many stars.
"One million away. It's a small miracle I'm me. This could have been my Earth easily." said Jasher. "Time to get to work."
"What are we here for anyway?" Asked Kay, a fellow Sysadmin.
"I was hoping you could tell me. The path lead here. I still haven't figured out why... here. These are never on the path. They must have made or discovered something we need." said Jasher.
"Ok, I'll use mah brain." said Kay.
"Thanks. I'll start the reunion tour." said Jasher.
You'd think he'd just press a rewind button, but nobody learns anything if you do that. Instead he started plucking folks out of the library record using Rise/Rejoin, and depositing them on Boaz. Since Kay was running this one, she simply made a gateway to the lobe on Stephy. Stephy was a massive 2000km long ship with gravity engines so powerful, realities could be created inside. Kay and Stephy had previously erected the tiny Universe on lobe four, for another Earth.
With the bridge set up, Kay took off for the dead planet below. She started her hunt. She plowed through the cinder, each hand a temporal field scanning through sections of time, putting together the puzzle. She'd find it. She always did. This was like her Sudoku.
As the final few of their folk walked the few hundred yards from the area Jasher set up for Rejoin, one of their philosophers, waiting his turn to walk through the bridge, noticed Jasher relaxing in a comfy chair. Thousands upon thousands of hours of saying the same things to a lot of different people had him tired, but approachable. So he asked Jasher;
"Where did we go wrong?"
"Ah, let me check." Jasher spun in his comfy chair, and flipped out a console, fiddled with it for a few seconds...
"Downvoting. Your society embraced the idea of downvoting." said Jasher. The philosopher looked at him confused.
"The idea of downvoting is the passive aggressive creation of negative energy with no conversation. Better, since it's typically being done to something negative, and there's a dog-piling effect, things get even more negative. And since there's no exchange of ideas, there's no resolution, so it immediately adds to the total negativity in your Universe. You literally down-clicked yourselves into oblivion. Once total intent becomes too negative, it's over. It's better to be more positive." said Jasher.
The philosopher blinked.
"The outlet you created for cowards that can't handle confrontation ruined your entire society." said Jasher.
"That's..." but the philosopher couldn't finish the sentence. He was still processing.
"Hey, it's your data. You volunteered it. Thanks. You are personally net positive though. You've added about .3 to intent so far. Good job! Oh, and Happy Thanksgiving! A good positive holiday. Lots of intent recovery. We should get you folks some food." said Jasher.
Many hours later...
"A type of Glam Rock that never happened anywhere else. That's what it was. There's a musical component that never happened anywhere else." said Kay.

2019.05.27 00:44 Madridi77 How do I randomly assign a group of values from an array to another?

Hi all,

Thank you so much for checking this.
So I am currently working on an assignment where I am stuck, the assignment asks to arrange seating on a flight.
"Your program will process data from an array of strings (call this the "bookings" array). The first array element will contain a number indicating how many seats the aircraft has. The remaining elements will contain information about groups of passengers who have booked seats on the flight. The first element of this grouping will be a number that indicates how many people are in the group. The remaining elements identify the individual passengers in that group by their last and first name. For example, the array might contain the following 10 strings:
8 2 Nobbly, Greg Nobbly, Jo-Anne 1 Lee, Sook 3 Lukas, Stephie Lukas, Cambridge Lukas, Ogden "

"
our program will seat passengers as follows:
  1. First, it will see if there are enough seats remaining on the flight for everyone in the group; if not, it will display an error message and not assign seats to anyone in the group.
  2. Secondly, it will go through the "seats" array to determine if a block of empty seats large enough to seat the entire group together is available (for example, if the group size is 3, it will see if there are 3 consecutive empty seats).
I am stuck on part 2...
How do I keep track of the empty seats enough for the group or not? I've been trying this for few days now and I am just stumped.

Appreciate all the help.

2014.01.26 16:23 twobitidiot In honor of Bitcoin $1,000*, here's a list of Mt. Gox's valued customers (*Price is not reflective of the actual value of bitcoin)

I've compiled a list of Mt. Gox's "valued customers" from its twitter stream. Ask yourself if a legitimate company would have a similar stream and lack of customer support.
It's time to put Mt. Gox out to pasture. They were a phenomenal innovator, but it's now just a dangerous exchange.
